Comparing One Dog Food WIth All The Others

Investigation: All Canned Dog Food

We have recently come to the conclusion that commercial dog foods are nutritionally evil, and that the best diet is a homemade diet. But three factors may still sway you towards purchasing, rather than making your own food for your pet.

1) You're just not much of a cook,
2) There's the whole (obvious) convenience factor.
3) You may not be confident in your abilities to correctly ascertain your dog's needs, and the appropriate nutritional balance.

We came to your rescue! In a recent study of all the major brands (and not so major brands) of dog food, were all put to the test, rating one against the other. Paying close attention to all the ingredients that make up their product. We wanted to see if there were any dog food products that were safe to feed your dog, that wouldn't possibly cause health problems in the coming years..

Very interesting to see none of the major brands making it on the recommended list! So if you decide to go withthe winners, you will have to make the purchase online, or possibly check at the pet stores and maybe your vets office for the dog food that topped the list.

One ingredient that came up quite often was Menadione Sodium Bisulfate, a synthetic form of Vitamin K. This ingredient is both unnecessary and potentially harmful. It has been linked to the following:

v Liver cell cytotoxicity
v Weakened immune systems
v Potential mutagenic effects
v Damage to the natural Vitamin K cycle
v Hemolytic anemia and jaundice
v Direct toxicity in high doses
v Irritation of the skin and mucous membranes
v Allergic reactions and eczema

Bad marks were given to those that used corn, wheat, "by-products", dairy, sugars, artificial colors, flavors and chemical preservatives. It was surprising to see corn as the first ingredient on many of the major dog food cans. Other common finds were Chicken By-product
Meal, Meat Meal, Meat & Bone Meal, Animal Fat.

You will certainly want to get the scoop on who scored the highest, and who didn't make the list at all. This study may motivate you to try your hand at baking a delicious homemade doggie recipe, or doggie biscuit in the near future!
